a small piece of sandpaper (if you want to change the shape of the polystyrene bud)
florist wire #20 (the length depends on how you want to attach the balloon)
pliers (to cut the wire)
scissors (ideally small, curved ones)
small ball tool
cake dummy (whichever size you have)
red 50/50 FP/SP mix* - 18 g
red (or other colour of your choice)
paste (gel) colour:
black (or other colour of your choice)
FP = flower paste (gum paste).
SP = sugarpaste (fondant).
50/50 FP/SP mix = FP and SP mixed in a 1:1 ratio. To make a 50/50 FP/SP mix, mix similar size pieces of FP and SP.
To make a balloon you will need a polystyrene bud.
The size I used: 35 mm x 27 mm.
You'll find information about polystyrene and food safety here.
You can use a small piece of sandpaper to round the pointy part slightly. You can round the top part too if it’s too flat.
Use a florist wire* to make a tunnel in the bottom as shown in the photo. I inserted it to a depth of about 1.5 cm. Make sure you are inserting it straight. If the tunnel is not straight, the balloon will not be attached straight.
