About this tutorial
I've always had a soft spot for creating quirky little characters. Lately, I've been focusing more on popular cake topper designs, so Halloween felt like the perfect opportunity to return to that playful side of my creativity and make something a little unusual. And that's how this little, slightly mouldy Zombie Toast came to life.
I knew when he was still just a sketch that I wanted to keep him on my desk. Some days I feel exactly how he looks, haha, so it'll be nice to have him around as a little companion.
Although I created him with Halloween in mind, I think he'd be just as fun to make at any time of year, especially if you love unusual, quirky characters. You don't need a special occasion or even a cake to make him. Sometimes it's just lovely to create something for the joy of it.
When I made him again to test the templates, it took me waaay less time. All the measurements and proportions were already worked out, so I could simply follow the templates without having to figure everything out as I went. Such a difference!
I hope you enjoy bringing this little guy to life as much as I did.

What you'll learn
You will learn how to:
- Shape all parts of this quirky little cake topper.
- Assemble the topper so it holds its shape well without sagging.
- Create sunken eyes, under-eye wrinkles, tiny teeth and other facial details that give him his tired, slightly grumpy expression.
- Create a soft, melted butter effect.
- Add details such as clothing creases, small tears in the shirt and a stitched scar.
- Use colour dusting to add shadows and depth, bring out the details and give the toast a slightly mouldy, worn-out appearance.
