About this tutorial
I’ve had many requests for a car cake topper tutorial, so I’m really happy to finally share this one with you. It’s based on a technique I use for all of my car designs and was created to make the whole process feel simpler and more manageable.
Instead of modelling the entire car from one solid piece of paste, the tutorial shows a clear construction method that gives you much more control over the shape and proportions right from the start. The process is broken down into easy stages, so you can build the car step by step at your own pace.
Printable templates are included to guide sizes and shapes, meaning you don’t need to work things out as you go — everything is already planned for you.
To keep the topper light, the tutorial uses a polystyrene core for the main body, but you can also use Rice Krispie Treats if you prefer. Making the whole car from sugar paste is possible too, just with a bit more weight.
This approach makes car toppers easier to build, more consistent in shape, and far less frustrating than modelling everything from a single block of paste.
What you'll learn
You will learn how to:
- create a clean, well-proportioned car topper using a simple construction method you can reuse for other car styles (so you’re not shaping the whole car from one solid block)
- achieve the ‘set-in’ wheel look while keeping the sides straight and the edges sharp
- build the car slightly elevated using a simple method that gives a more realistic look and helps the wheels keep their shape
- add the details so everything looks sharp, clean, and consistent
- build the seat area so you can add a small topper in there if you want
- assemble the topper step by step so it holds its shape and looks great from every angle
