Step 1

Make the indented lines on the feet the same way as the seams on the Teddy Bear.

Step 2

Insert a short (about 2 cm) piece of florist wire (gauge: #24-#20) in the middle of the belly. It should be pointing up slightly. You will use it to attach the carrot.

Step 3

I made the head the same way as in the ‘Teddy Bear’ tutorial, but made the mouth and nose differently.

The nose is just a tiny flattened triangle.

To make the mouth: Indent the lines with the fine end of the dresden tool. Retexture the paste along the indented lines. That way you will narrow the indentations slightly (the lines won’t be thick). Deepen the lines with a scalpel. Once the paste dries a little, use black gel (paste) colour and a very fine brush to paint the lines along (inside) the cuts.

Insert two about 4 cm long florist wires (#20 or #22) as shown in the photo (template 31*). The part that sticks out from the head should be about 2.5 cm long.

Step 4

To make the ears:
Roll a 1 g ball of very light pink flower paste/gum paste (template 32). Roll a slightly tapering towards one end sausage (33). Flatten the wider end (34). Leave the base of the ear thick.

If the ear (especially the base) is too thin the wire will poke through or show through.

Step 5

Place the ear on your hand (or on a foam pad) and use a large ball tool to make an indentation as shown in the photo (press at the top and move the tool towards the base of the ear, but don’t flatten the base of the ear too much - it needs to be thick).

Step 6

This is how the ear looks like at this stage.

Step 7

Use the round side of the dresden tool to make an indentation on the lower part of the ear. Don’t press too hard – the base of the ear needs to be quite thick, so that you can insert a wire in it and so that the ears hold properly after attaching.

Step 9

Pinch the edge all around as shown in the photo. Work gradually. If the paste is sticky, put it away for a moment. Meanwhile you can wash your hands, dry them thoroughly and grease them with a small amount of white vegetable fat (f.ex. Trex).

Step 10

Leave the ear to dry for a few minutes – it needs to hold the shape well.

Cut off the narrower end. Make a tunnel in the ear with a clean, dry* wire (same gauge as you inserted in the head). Insert it closer to the back of the ear. If it shows at the back a little, don’t worry – the back of the ear is going to be covered with fur anyway.

Make the other ear the same as the first one.

* There’s no need to apply glue on the wire, because the wire will be taken out. You just need to make a tunnel.

Step 11

Cover the ear with sugarpaste and texture it the same way as explained in the ‘Teddy Bear’ tutorial. Take the wire out.

Step 12

Apply a small amount of glue on the wires (that are sticking out from the head) and on the base of the ears. Attach the ears.

Step 13

CARROT:
Roll a 6 g ball of orange flower paste/gum paste (template 35). Form a teardrop shape (36). Flatten it (37). Flatten the wider end (38).

Use the fine end of the dresden tool to indent lines from the sides.
Use a small ball tool to make eye sockets. Roll two tiny balls of black paste and stick them in the eye indentations.

Paint the smile with black gel (paste) colour. You can dissolve the colour in a small amount of water if there’s need. Use a very fine brush.

Roll three small tapering towards one end sausages of green flower paste. Let them dry for some time (they need to hold the shape well). Make three holes on the top of the carrot with a wire or a cocktail stick. Stick the leaves in the holes with a very small amount of glue. Too much glue will dissolve the paste and the leaves won’t hold.

Once the carrot is dry, dust it and attach it (wire in the belly). Use softened paste* instead of glue.

* How to make softened paste: Mix the flower paste/gum paste with some glue until you get a tacky consistency; use it right away.

ARMS:
Make them the same way as in the ‘Teddy’ Bear tutorial, but indent lines (fingers).

Once the cake topper is completely dry, dust it :)
